Hi, I'm looking to start recording, and I'm having some issues. I have a nice guitar and amp, but I'm not sure how to record well. I started using the program audacity on my laptop so I could record layers, and it works well and all, but the built in mic on my laptop sucks ass. Does anybody know of an inexpensive mic or something that can work with my laptop and the program to make my recordings sound better? I'm not looking for studio sound, I'd just like my tone to stay the same the whole time, my current mic is pissing me off The mic needs to be compatible by usb port unless you know some other setup..

most people would recommend the sm57 for guitar recording.
I personally am looking at the sennheiser e609 or e906 if I ever get good enough to record.
but anything including a horribly microphonic guitar pickup would probably sound better than a standard laptop mic, I know mine isn't worth a damn lol
dunno depends how "cheap" you are talking ive recorded with the mic that came with rock band (its usb so it just plugs in and works) now does it sound great (probably not, still i've always wondered if I could mod it for other mics someday)

I use that and the Shure SM57 at the same time when recording a Cabinet. I may grab a Sennheiser e609 to see how much of a difference there is between the e906 and it. After reading about both of them I chose the e906 because of the 3 Switchable Presence Filters. But on a budget, the e609 would do very well. If I had to choose between the Shure SM57 and the Sennheiser e609, I would spend the extra $10 bucks give or take and grab the e609 for sure.

Thanks for the help, the sennheiser e906 seems perfect, and Its in my price range. So, until I get it, I have one more question. I was thinking of getting a boss br-900, is the e906 compatible with it, or would I have to get yet another mic?

hey have you tried using a condenser mic out, i started a recording course and we use sm 57 for guitar which work quite nice but, there was this condenser mic we used in my course which let all the tones of the amp come through. Instead of getting a nice sound from the amp and then a totally different sound on the actually track. Try a condenser about a foot or 2 away, i have a a couple of cads which are really flat and natural and not that expensive gxl2200 cheaper mic m177 a bit more more expensive but still not that expensive at all
